Shocked vs. shocking

WRONG: The news was really shocked for me.
RIGHT: The news was really shocking for me.

Learners often mix up shocked and shocking because they look similar, but they have different meanings.

  • shocked = how you feel
  • shocking = what causes the feeling

So a situation, event or piece of news can be shocking, and the person reacting to it is shocked.

Here’s a short conversation to demonstrate:

A: Did you hear that our neighbour won the lottery twice in one week?

B: That’s shocking! No wonder everyone is shocked.
