Resolution vs. New Year’s resolution

WRONG: I have a resolution to start eating healthier.
RIGHT: I have a New Year’s resolution to start eating healthier.

When talking about plans for the new year, learners sometimes use the word resolution on its own. However, in English we always say New Year’s resolution.

The word resolution by itself sounds unfinished or unclear without the New Year context.

Here’s a short conversation to demonstrate:

A: Do you have any New Year’s resolutions this year?

B: Yes, my New Year’s resolution is to take better care of myself.
