The words few and a few cause a lot of confusion, and sometimes can completely change the meaning of what you want to say.
Both are often translated as málo or několik, but they are not the same. If you say, I have few friends, it sounds quite negative, almost like you don’t really have any friends. It can even sound a bit sad or lonely. Instead, if you mean that you have some friends (just not many), you should say, I have a few friends.
We do, however, use few on its own when we want to emphasise that something is really limited or not enough. For example, you can say, There are few opportunities in this area, meaning there aren’t many and it might be a problem.
A: There are few people at the party.
B: There are a few people at the party.
