Board games vs. table games

B1- B1 B2 C1

WRONG: I love playing table games with my friends.
RIGHT: I love playing board games with my friends.

Games like Activity and Scrabble are very popular in the Czech Republic, especially when people go away to their cottages for the weekend. But they are not ‘table games’ as most students say, but ‘board games’.

Sure, they are played on a table, but the square board which you put on the table is what gives the games their names. We do not call them desk games either.

A table game, perhaps, could be table tennis, but all the others – Chess, Scrabble, Cluedo etc – are board games. So, a conversation, for example, could be:

A: What is your favourite board game?
B: I don’t really like board games. I prefer card games like poker.
