Another things vs. other things

B1- B1 B2 C1

WRONG: I have so many another things to do.
RIGHT: I have so many other things to do.

This week’s mistake is a simple one but one which is so, so common. I have lost count of the number of times I have heard my students say something like, „I have so many another things to do“.

‘Another’ is related to just one other thing, where there are two things in total. So, you might say, „I have to do some ironing, and another thing I have to do is clean the windows.“ Ironing plus one more thing = another thing.

If there are more things, we use ‘other’ – with a plural noun. So, we’d say, „I have so many other things to do“, e.g. ironing, cleaning windows, vacuuming, tidying etc.

Here are the two together:

A: Do you have any other things to finish today?
B: I just have another short report to write and then I’m done.
