Alone vs. single

B1- B1 B2 C1

WRONG: Am I married? No, I am alone.
RIGHT: Am I married? No, I am single.

Ever since the birth of Facebook, the phrase ‘relationship status’ has gained a much wider use,
so it is very important that we say the right thing.

If you reply to the question, “Are you married?” with “No, I am alone”, it sounds very dramatic,
as if there is no one left in the world but you. When we say we are alone, it simply means there are no other people in the room but us. The correct answer should be, “No, I am single.”

Confused? Here they are used together correctly.

A: Are you married?
B: No, I am single. I would like a boyfriend but I can’t imagine sharing a flat with someone. I like living alone!
